There they are. Put away when you moved into your new home almost ten years ago, those boxes have been pushed from side to side, front to back, stacked on top of one another and then moved again at least once every 365 days as you have struggled to reorganize your garage. But the time is upon you! Stop pushing, shoving and stacking. Let’s get serious about garage organizing. Your automobiles will thank you for it.
Realistic garage organizing can only start when you first accept that you are really never going to use what you have had put away for more years than you can imagine. You have to get rid of the mushiness and move on. Once the emotions are in check, you can classify, stash away, and put to use or donate your favorite old belongings. Then it is time to take on the rest of the clutter in your garage.
• First, take everything out of its current position. That includes running automobiles, mowers, boats and any other big items from the garage.
• Second, organize everything. Put all tools in 1 place, sports equipment in another, housecleaning supplies in another, hand tools in another, and so on.
• Third, take inventory. This organizational trick will allow you to key out matching items so you can dispatch the extras or eradicate items that haven’t been utilized in many years. It will also assist as a great chart to help you control the flow of the items that you stock in your garage.
• Fourth, design the flow. The freezer and house cleaning items need to be close to the door leading into the house. Gardening instruments might store nicely next to the door leading to the back yard as will shovels and rakes. Hand tools require special storage with an organizational scheme of their own.
• Fifth, set-up the activity centers. Do you own storage shelves or are you storing things in boxes? If your money permits, organize your garage with shelves and cabinets that provide easy access to your material. If you use your garage as a shop, be sure to give yourself a bench so that you can use your tools efficiently.
• Sixth, reload. That’s right, start putting all your items away according to when, why and how frequently they are used.
Your garage organizing isn’t over until you’ve taken the broom and given the area a nice, clean sweep. Nothing appears better than tidy shelves, a glaring floor and tools hanging in their proper places.
Now you are ready for the piece de resistance. It is time to return your automobiles, those four-wheeled investments, back inside to the warmth and luxury of a well organized garage.
